Katie and Lilly as children

Who we are

Kin and Kiln is a hand-built ceramic and art practice based in Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia by sisters Katie Gamblin and Lilly Hope Borchardt. They aim to connect with others through their creative work and custom-made-to-order pieces.

Katie and Lilly are always learning and striving to extend their artistic practice and incorporate new techniques.

Kin and Kiln create at Dabbler Studio alongside a community of other like-minded artists.

Lilly

Lilly Hope Borchardt

Lilly is a ceramicist and artist with over 15 years of experience in design and illustration. She loves exploring colour and lettering within her ceramic work and is influenced by her childhood love of quirky forms and colour combinations.

Recent artworks explore texture variations of different materials and glazes to create tactile vessels that are meant to be touched.

Katie

Katie Gamblin

Katie is an artist that enjoys the tactile experience of clay and the satisfaction that comes from bringing a 2D design to life as a 3D object.

She takes inspiration from both nature and her imagination to create both sculptures and functional ceramic pieces.

Mission statement

Our mission at Kin and Kiln is to thoughtfully create quality pieces using sustainable ceramic practices. Kin and Kiln aspire to connect with others through our creative work and custom made-to-order pieces.  Our aim is to help customers add beautiful and functional pieces to their homes and workplaces by including colour and whimsy in our forms and illustrations. We (Katie and Lilly) are always learning and striving to extend our artistic practice and incorporate new techniques.

Our values

To include SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES in all areas of making.  We do this by recycling and reusing all unfired clay, making mindfully by focusing on quality, repurposing packaging, and using recyclable packaging

To be WELCOMING and FRIENDLY to everyone.  We do this by engaging as positively as possible with any/all people regardless of background/how they look/who they are.  We encourage customers who are interested to explore ceramic hand-building themselves as a mindful and beautiful hobby.

To SUPPORT and PROMOTE WOMEN and other marginalised groups, especially in similar fields. We do this by openly sharing our processes and tricks of the trade, sharing any and all opportunities we come across, and attending and promoting fellow artists’ exhibitions.
